Seasonal Fitness – Are You Guilty

It happens every year…

It begins as a whisper, as a feeling.  There is an anticipation and excitement in the air.  As summer draws to a close, this excitement can be summed up in two words…

“Sweater Weather.”

For some, “Sweater Weather” represents a welcome relief from the oppressive heat of summer and the opportunity to dust off some clothes or buy a new wardrobe.

But for others, this phrase represents something far more damaging and dangerous.

How can two little words be so troublesome?

Too often, “Sweater Weather” means one thing… no more working out, no more eating healthy foods and no more going to the gym or being active.

That’s right. For a lot of people, and maybe even you, fitness is as seasonal as the changing of the calendar pages.

It doesn’t have to correspond to actual seasonal changes either.  Seasonal fitness is simply a constant fluctuation in fitness level and commitment throughout the year.

Often, it begins in January, most likely with a resolution to change your health and fitness once and for all.  An opportunity to undo the damage that has been done over the holidays and post-summer months.

Like the warm air prompting a tree to blossom in the spring, you jump into action.

Of course this is no small task.  You have months, maybe years of damage you are attempting to undo.  You go all out for the next few months trying to squeeze in as much fitness and dieting as possible.

Maybe you pick up a trendy workout routine that promises changes in weeks, even though it is way over your head and current fitness level.  It’s an exhausting process that leaves you frustrated, confused and possibly injured.   And because you aren’t taking the time to approach your fitness change progressively, you may or may not actually see results.

Hopefully, you reach out to a professional for guidance and get a plan that is just right for your goals.  It’s exactly what you need, but you are frustrated with the fact that it will take time to undo the damage you have done in the past.

Summertime rolls around, and you are as ready as you can be.  You can’t help but be a little disappointed that you didn’t start earlier or do more.  You feel better about where you are, but know that you are nowhere close to where you could be.

You manage to limp through the warmer months, still carrying the insecurities and health issues you had before.

Then finally it happens… “Sweater Weather!”

Regardless of which route you chose for your “seasonal plan”, and despite any gains you may have seen… you quit.  You give up your nutrition plan.  You stop working out.  You take a deep breath as you fall right back into your bad habits.

And so begins the annual cycle of “Seasonal Fitness”, a frustrating roller coaster ride that happens each year, while never actually leading you to permanent change.

Don’t believe me that it’s real?

The numbers agree with how many people actually participate in this sadistic practice:

Studies have shown that, on average, 73% of people who start the year with a new fitness goal quit!

What’s worse, nearly half of those people quit within six weeks or less!!

Approaching fitness this way is miserable for a variety of reasons:

  • It’s stressful to always be worried about your health and fitness level
  • You can get injured trying to change your lifestyle in an unrealistic period of time
  • It’s frustrating to not see results or have results stall out because you don’t have the right plan

 

Instead of riding the ups and downs of a seasonal fitness plan, what if you did something every day to keep your body looking and functioning the way you want it to?  Isn’t that a lot easier than trying to overhaul everything in a few months, only to let it go again and never see real results?

Summer bodies are created in the fall, winter and spring.

Don’t apply a seasonal cycle to your fitness routine.  It only leads to frustration, stress and a lack of lasting results.
