Online training, what exactly is it anyway?

Being a coach, you sometimes forget that don’t know what you don’t know.

What am I talking about? Well, the other day I was having a conversation with a friend of mine. She saw a sticker on my bottle that said ‘I Train Online’ and she asked me what that meant. It made me realize that it may not be clear what online exercise and nutrition training is so this post is hopefully going to clear things up.

Here’s a really good  definition of what online training is:

The delivery of a learning, training or education program by electronic means. E-learning involves the use of a computer or electronic device (e.g. a mobile phone) in some way to provide training, educational or learning material.” (Derek Stockley 2003)

Simple right?

With the aid of our computers, cell phones, and of course, the internet it is getting information and training has never been so easy AND convenient.

Gone are the days when you have to speak to someone in person to be able to learn from them. Videos and online dashboards can give us a way to learn from the best about whatever suits our fancy – including exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle coaching.

 

Common Online Training Options

  • Online nutrition and/or exercise plans can be delivered right to your phone or computer using a  dashboard where are you receive lessons or workouts that you can do anytime it suits your schedule. No more juggling to fit into someone else’s schedule! Simply log in to get the information you need.
  • With webcams and video, online training could be a coaching or training session right from your living room. If you want to work with trainer across the country, it’s possible. You don’t have to be in the same room to be able to carry on a conversation and still be face to face, you just need a webcam and a good internet connection.
  • Hybrid programs are a combination of both online dashboards or apps and some sort of video session where you connect with your coach or group.
    • This type of program is the one I prefer to offer because I’m able to give someone the accountability and the connection most people need when they are looking to change their habits and routines to become healthier. With this type of program, as a coach, I can deliver small bits of information regularly rather than overwhelming someone with too much at once.

Change takes time and having a coach in your corner goes a long way to ensure your success.

Wondering, is online training for you?

It is suited for the busy person who is a real go-getter who doesn’t need someone to get them to take action. Online training is an inexpensive way to get direction from a certified personal trainer or nutrition coach so you can fast-track your results without putting a strain on your wallet. If you are motivated to reach your goals, having a workout or nutrition plan that you can log in and complete is perfect for you. It gives you the peace of mind that you know what you’re doing to reach your goals safely and effectively. Your coach is only a message way if you need clarification or some motivation to get you over a hump.

Who is online training NOT for?

Online training is not for somebody who needs constant motivation to get started and regular accountability to ensure that you are checking in and completing your workouts or lessons. Having a coach you can see regularly would be a better option and will help you build the skills you need. Some people just don’t like doing things alone and having those one-on-one conversations with a coach is a better option for you. You know who you are. 😉

I am also going to say that online training is not for the beginner, ideally. If you are not familiar with the exercises and what proper form looks like, then I wouldn’t suggest starting there. Invest in a couple of sessions with a personal trainer to teach you proper form for the foundation exercises and you can progress from there. Once you know how to do certain movements correctly, you won’t have to worry about causing an injury. After you have a solid foundation, you are able to transition to online training, if that’s what you choose.

What types of Online Training do you offer?

I have a variety of in-home and online training programs to suit most people’s needs. Some will start out with in-home training and then later switch to online training as a maintenance program.

Training on the Go is your exercise dashboard. Get your workouts, track your progress, and have a direct line to me whenever you need me. Your workout of the day is delivered according to your workout plan and if you aren’t sure of an exercise, there’s a short video to show you how it’s done.

You can choose to focus on your nutrition and lifestyle habits together with exercise or on its own. I break down the key components to creating a healthy lifestyle into manageable tasks so that you can build your skills by practicing. This program helps you change your relationship with food so dieting will be a thing from the past. You will have the support you need, along with lessons to educate, and experiments to test things out to see how they fit for you.

All skills are built with practice!

Lastly, I have a hybrid program where  I will see a client in person either once a week or bi-weekly and they are either completing their workouts or their nutrition lessons on their own between sessions. During our in-person session, we go over any questions or concerns and review their upcoming plans for the week to come.

Each person is going to be able to decide whether each of the features of online training are a Pro or a Con. Adding those up will help you decide whether online training is the best option for you.

I hope that answers any questions that you may have about what online training is or isn’t. There are so many different options, finding the one that is going to suit you best may take a little bit of trial and error. Just like not every coach is for every person, not every online program is for every person. When you are looking into a training program to make sure to ask lots of questions. if the trainer doesn’t have time to talk to you then I would suggest looking for another trainer.
