12 Days of Christmas Tips

On the 12th day of Christmas, Coach Lisa gave to me … 12 easy tips to stay healthy …

For the singers out there, you probably got caught up in the Christmas carol.  Through Facebook, I have shared 12 tips over the past 12 days to help you stay healthy during the festive season.

Let me recap them here … they are not just for Christmas – you can apply them any time of year!

Coach Lisa’s Tip #1:  Apply the 80/20 Rule

You don’t have to be perfect… now or ever. Think of the 80/20 rule. You are being mindful to keep up with your workouts and continuing to think ahead by making healthy food choices 80% of the time. For the other 20% of the time, relax and feel confident. The little indulgence isn’t going to completely derail you.

Coach Lisa’s Tip #2: Savour Your Food

The holiday season is upon us and the parties have begun! There are so many wonderful treats and decadent foods to tempt even me! You don’t to be ‘that’ person that is forever turning foods down because of your latest diet, right? The first tip to add to your toolbox is to SLOW DOWN! Eating slowly will help you to savour your treat and let your belly have time to tell your brain you’ve had enough.  Click on this link to learn more about eating slowly and why it helps!

Coach Lisa’s Tip #3: A Short Workout is Better than No Workout

Just because you are short on time doesn’t mean you have to skip out on your workout. Keep it simple!  Bookmark this short workout you can do anywhere.  Make it a practice to stay in shape even when you’re busy.

Coach Lisa’s Tip #4: Swap That Out!

Making some simple foods swaps can really help keep some of those calories down. If you put a little thought into it, you won’t be over-indulging in calories. It’s a win-win, right?  Test yourself to see how many things you can swap out while still keeping the flavour!  You’ll be surprised.

Coach Lisa’s Tip #5: Eat for Immunity

How many times have had plans for a party or a gathering and that morning you wake up with a fever and a cough? With the holidays, there’s usually at least one person that will come down with a cold. Learn how you can prevent the cold in the first place or how to feel better, faster.  Bonus tool:  Download and keep handy the infographic for future reference.

Coach Lisa’s Tip #6: Exercise to Feel Better … Faster

When sickness hits, our first response is to curl up with a blanket and lay there until we feel better. Moving your body, even a little, will do wonders for getting you moving and feeling better… faster.  I’m not talking a major HIIT workout, keep it light with walking, jogging, swimming, biking, Qi Gong, T’ai chi, or yoga.

Coach Lisa’s Tip #7: Rest Up!

Yup – grant yourself the gift of rest! With the long days of work and then, what seems like endless shopping and festive gatherings, it’s easy to burn yourself out. Do your best to get enough sleep – you will be glad you did! When you are tired, little things can quickly become magnified and push you to your limits. So sit back, put your feet up and enjoy the last 5 tips!

Coach Lisa’s Tip #8: Drink Your Meal

No, not that kind of drink! In this supershake guide, learn how to make the perfect super shake! Just because you are on the go, does not mean you have to skip your meal or worse yet, go through a drive-thru. Stay on track with your eating habits and you will be able to enjoy that Christmas dinner without the guilt.

Coach Lisa’s Tip #9:  One simple word – WATER!

Everyone is going to indulge and most, will even over-indulge, it’s the holidays after all, right? Sipping a glass of water for every glass of wine or alcoholic drink you have, will help you stay hydrated.  Still got a hangover after that? Drink some more! Flushing your system helps you recover faster! I don’t want to push my luck here, but reach for a sparkling water instead of the alcoholic beverages from time to time.

Coach Lisa’s Tip #10: Be Selfish, It’s OK

If you need some time to regroup … take it! Have a bath, read a book, get your nails done, or have a nap, watch a movie. It’s ok to be selfish! Even a little bit will go a long way to reducing your stress levels.

Almost there … two more tips:

Coach Lisa’s Tip #11:  Make Guilt-Free Treats!

There are so many healthier versions of the regular Christmas treats that will satisfy your need to indulge without the guilt that has a tendency to go along with it. A little forethought and you can make something that doesn’t have the extra sugars and empty calories. Finding recipes has never been as easy as it is now. I have shared some of my favourites in my Group Album of Less Guilt Recipes.

Coach Lisa’s Tip #12: Lemon Water

Lemon juice 30 minutes before meal time helps get your digestion started! Try adding 1/2 lemon in a tall glass of water prior to your main meals and drink slowly. Then, when your meal is ready, eat slowly, taking small bites and fully chewing your food. Believe it or not, this really does help you eat less and will help you cut out the excess calories.

There you have the full list of 12 Days to a Healthy Christmas.  In one simple phrase: enjoy, over-indulge, take a break, fit in a quick workout, and hydrate.

Wishing you a healthy, happy, and fit Holiday Season!
